International Day of the Girl Child: Investing in Girls, Ending Child Marriage in Kenya

September 29, 2026

Every girl deserves to grow up safe, stay in school, dream boldly, and have the freedom to decide her own future.

But in Kenya, many girls still face futures shaped by poverty, harmful traditions, and child marriage. This International Day of the Girl Child, the theme “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights!” reminds us that protecting girls takes more than words. It takes real action, opportunities, and investment.

The Reality for Girls in Kenya

Child marriage remains a serious challenge in Kenya. According to UNICEF, 23% of young women aged 20–24 were married or in a union before the age of 18, while 4% were married before turning 15. UNICEF also estimates that more than 4 million girls and women in Kenya were married in childhood based on national survey data.

Child marriage can stop a girl’s education before she has the chance to find out what she can do. It also raises the risk of violence, early pregnancy, being cut off from others, and fewer chances to earn a living.

Kenya’s laws set 18 as the minimum age for marriage, but informal and traditional unions still put girls in danger.

Education can be a strong way to protect girls and give them new opportunities.

How Moja Tu Helps Protect Girls

At Moja Tu, we believe every child deserves the chance to build a different future.

Working in Kenya, Moja Tu supports vulnerable and endangered students by helping remove barriers that can keep them out of school. For girls at risk of child marriage, access to education can mean the opportunity to remain focused on learning rather than being pushed into adulthood too soon.

Sometimes, our work is more than just helping with school. Moja Tu also rescues girls in danger and connects them with partner Children’s Homes, where they can live safely, get care and support, and keep going to school.

These efforts give girls what every child should have: a safe place to learn, grow, and plan for their future.

Our support also includes school fees, uniforms, shoes, textbooks, school supplies, medical care, mentorship, and emotional support.

But our work is about more than providing resources. It is about surrounding students with people who believe in their potential.

Investing in Girls Changes Futures

Ending child marriage requires communities, families, organizations, and governments to work together. It also requires recognizing that investing in girls is an investment in the future of Kenya.

At Moja Tu, every girl who stays in school shows what’s possible.

A classroom can become a pathway to university. Education can become a pathway to employment, independence, leadership, and a life shaped by her own choices.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, we celebrate the girls who keep learning, dreaming, and moving forward, and the people who support them.

Together, we can protect girls, support their rights, keep them in school, and help build a future where every girl can choose her own path.

Every girl deserves to be safe. Every girl deserves an education. And every girl deserves the chance to become everything she dreams of.
