There are moments that remind us why we do this work. Our sponsors’ April trip to Kenya was one of those moments. For ten unforgettable days, sponsors traveled across Nairobi, Naivasha, and Laikipia alongside the Moja Tu team to experience firsthand the impact of sponsorship, mentorship, and community.
While the trip included beautiful scenery and memorable adventures, its true heart lay in the relationships built over the years among sponsors, students, families, alumni, and the wider Moja Tu community.
Meeting Students Where Their Stories Begin
One of the most meaningful parts of the trip was visiting the communities where our students live and study. In Nairobi, Naivasha, and Laikipia, sponsors attended student and parent gatherings that brought together families, students, and the Moja Tu team. These events created opportunities for conversations, encouragement, and celebration.
Sponsors had the chance to learn more about the students they support through face-to-face interactions. They listened to stories of perseverance, academic achievement, and personal growth. Students shared their dreams for the future, while parents expressed their gratitude for the opportunities sponsorship has made possible.
Home Visits That Deepened Connections
For many sponsors, the most memorable moments happened during home visits. Being welcomed into students’ homes offered a deeper understanding of their daily lives, challenges, and aspirations. Families generously opened their doors, shared meals, and welcomed sponsors as part of their communities.
These visits transformed sponsorship from a relationship on paper, email, and video calls into a personal connection. Sponsors heard firsthand about the sacrifices families make to support their children. Many families also presented gifts and tokens of appreciation to their sponsors. The warmth, hospitality, and gratitude shared during these visits left a lasting impression on everyone involved.
Amy Smith, one of the sponsors, describes the experience as deeply personal: “My favorite part of the trip was hearing about the lives of our students, their schools, friendships, and daily experiences. It truly was the trip of a lifetime, and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to visit the students and experience the beauty of Africa.”
Mike Smith reflected on the meaningful connections formed throughout the journey and the joy of meeting students face-to-face after years of supporting them from afar: “Our trip with Moja Tu in April was truly an amazing experience. It was so wonderful to spend time with our students in person and see how much they’ve grown and accomplished in the years since we first met. Everyone, from students to staff, made us feel so welcome and accepted as friends, family, and part of the amazing culture (mbwegze!). Napenda Kenya na Moja Tu!”
The trip also included dedicated time with university students, many of whom are preparing to enter the workforce and begin independent lives. Students shared presentations about their academic journeys, personal challenges, career aspirations, and future goals. Sponsors had the opportunity to ask questions, offer encouragement, and gain insight into the next chapter of their students’ lives.
Alumni Returning to Give Back
One of the most inspiring moments of the trip came when ten Moja Tu alumni returned to share their experiences with current university students. They spoke about life after graduation, building careers, overcoming obstacles, and finding purpose in their professional journeys while mentoring and encouraging the next generation.
The alumni session demonstrated that the Moja Tu story does not end at graduation. It continues through leadership, mentorship, and a commitment to helping others succeed. For sponsor Monique, returning to Kenya offered a powerful perspective on how far both the students and the organization have come.
“Returning to Kenya for my fourth visit was incredibly meaningful. Kenya is a beautiful country, and I encourage every sponsor to experience the trip and connect with their student in person. What impressed me most was seeing how much Moja Tu has grown, from expanded programs and rural outreach to thriving communities and successful alumni. Reconnecting with former students and seeing them achieve their dreams was inspiring and a powerful reminder of the lasting impact Moja Tu has on changing lives.”
Relationships That Last a Lifetime
At its core, the April trip was about connections. Sponsorship is not simply financial support. It is encouragement. It is mentorship. It is friendship. It is the belief that every young person deserves someone who believes in them. For everyone who joined us on this journey, thank you.
