“Volunteering is often seen as an act of kindness, but for me, it has been a transformative journey—one that has shaped my career, enriched my life, and allowed me to make a tangible difference,” says David, a fourth-year student at Kenyatta University with a degree in Health Records Management and Informatics.
David’s story is one of service, growth, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting his community. Raised in a supportive environment that valued education and community service, his university years were a time of both personal discovery and academic achievement. But it was through voluntary work that David found his true calling.
Discovering Purpose Through Moja Tu
David’s journey with Moja Tu, an organization dedicated to transforming lives through education, offered him more than just financial support—it gave him the opportunity to make a difference. As a sponsored student, David volunteered at Dreams Children’s Home, an experience that left an indelible mark on him.
“Working with the children at Dreams Children’s Home was life-changing. It opened my eyes to the importance of service and the power of community,” he reflects.
This experience ignited David’s desire to do more, and he co-founded the Nyandarua Youth Charity and Empowerment Program (NYCEP).
What started as a small initiative has since grown into a registered program that supports orphans, the elderly, and young people. NYCEP focuses on food drives, mentorship programs, and empowerment initiatives designed to help individuals rise above their circumstances and become active contributors to society.
As the coordinator and a mentor at NYCEP, David is deeply involved in organizing events, engaging with local communities, and ensuring the program’s efforts align with the needs of those they serve.
“Volunteering has taught me leadership, empathy, and effective communication. More importantly, it has deepened my understanding of how interconnected we all are,” he shares.
Balancing academics with his volunteering commitments required a high level of discipline and time management. “Staying organized allowed me to excel in both areas. It wasn’t always easy, but the sense of fulfillment made it all worth it,” David says.
Like any worthwhile endeavor, NYCEP has faced challenges, particularly limited resources, when organizing large events. However, creativity, partnerships, and perseverance have enabled the team to adapt and continue making a meaningful impact.
David credits volunteering with not only shaping his character but also helping him build connections with like-minded individuals who have enriched his personal and professional life.
“My advice to anyone considering volunteering is simple: just start. Find something you’re passionate about and take the first step. The impact you make, no matter how small, can be life-changing,” he says.
Looking Ahead
As David reflects on his journey, he is filled with gratitude for the opportunities that have come his way and the lives he’s been able to touch. His journey from a Moja Tu student to a community leader exemplifies the incredible ripple effect of giving back. His efforts continue to inspire others to dream bigger, act boldly, and uplift those around them.
