Benson’s Journey: From Hardship to Hope

November 7, 2024

Meet Benson, a first-year university student pursuing a Bachelor’s in Veterinary Medicine. His story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of opportunity. Before joining Moja Tu, life was incredibly challenging for Benson and his two younger siblings.

“After losing our mother, we moved in with our grandparents while our father tirelessly searched for ways to cover school fees and provide for our basic needs. Despite his best efforts, it wasn’t always enough. Sometimes, my grandparents had to step in to pay school fees and meet other necessities, but as their health began to decline, I feared my dream of continuing my education would slip away,” he vividly recalls.

In 2019, while in his final year of primary school, a glimmer of hope appeared. The chairman of his school handed him a Moja Tu application form. Benson filled it out, attended an interview, and passed, opening the door to an organization that would change his life for the better.

Benson describes his journey with Moja Tu as “incredible.” Since joining the organization in Form One at Graceland Boys, Moja Tu has been a steadfast support, covering his school fees, providing essential shopping, revision books, and even food during the Covid-19 pandemic. This support not only lifted the burden from his ailing grandparents but also allowed Benson to focus fully on his studies.

One moment that particularly stands out to Benson was when Moja Tu stepped in to provide medical assistance during a difficult time when he had a distressing issue with his lower lip. This care and attention left a lasting impact on him.

“I experienced the same care and attention when I transitioned to university. This process was made much smoother thanks to Moja Tu, which equipped me with a laptop for my studies. Additionally, their support included guidance from a counselor who spoke to me and the other freshmen in preparation for university life,” he shares. He adds that, in addition to having his university fees covered, he also receives a monthly stipend, and his hostel accommodation is paid for.

He’s especially grateful to his sponsors, Mary and Marcus, who went above and beyond, gifting him a new pair of shoes and a smartphone, both of which have made his life on campus easier.

Reflecting on the lessons he’s learned, Benson says, “Moja Tu has taught me the value of giving more than you receive, and that together, we can go far.” When he first arrived at university, Benson was worried about the challenges ahead. But making a few friends quickly showed him that campus life wasn’t as difficult as he’d imagined.

The freedom he now experiences has been a pleasant surprise, and he is enjoying diving into his courses, especially learning how to manage his time and schedule effectively. Outside of his studies, Benson has joined a first-year Scrabble team, adding a bit of fun and balance to his routine.

Looking ahead, he’s determined to build a successful career in veterinary medicine not just for himself but for his siblings and grandparents, who have always been his biggest supporters. With a grateful heart, Benson says, “I want to give a huge thanks to my sponsors, Mary and Marcus. I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me. May God bless you abundantly.”
