For Kelvin Githuku Ruo, journalism is a calling to inform, educate, and transform communities. From a young age, Kelvin was drawn to storytelling and the power of the media to influence change. “It has always been my heart’s desire to be a journalist,” he says. “That dream is what keeps me going every single day.”
Kelvin’s journey with Moja Tu began in Class 8 at Muruku Primary School in Laikipia County, when he was selected as one of the top-performing students. That opportunity marked a turning point in his life. With Moja Tu’s support, he transitioned from a student with big dreams to a confident young professional ready to make a difference. “Where I am today is because of Moja Tu. They believed in me and gave me the chance to see the fruits of hard work through education,” Kelvin reflects.

Now studying journalism, Kelvin has learned how to gather, verify, and present information accurately; skills that have given him a deep appreciation for truth and integrity in storytelling. The hands-on practice of writing news stories has also helped him connect classroom learning to real-world reporting.
Among his favorite areas of study are photojournalism and development communication. In photojournalism, Kelvin learns to use a camera effectively and capture compelling images, while in development communication, he learns how media can promote social progress. A standout experience for him was attending a boot camp at Zetech University, where he learned to trace footage and identify misinformation —lessons that have strengthened his commitment to ethical reporting.
Like many students, Kelvin has faced challenges along the way, particularly the lack of enough class time to explore every topic in depth. However, his curiosity has driven him to keep learning. “When I don’t have enough time in class, I turn to YouTube and other online platforms to learn more,” he explains.
Kelvin’s passion lies in broadcast journalism, where he feels most confident and fulfilled. Inspired by prominent Kenyan journalists like Jeff Koinange, Sammy Gituku, and Waweru wa Nyambura, he dreams of using his voice and platform to tell stories that matter. “Through journalism, I want to change society by educating people and telling them the truth about what affects their lives,” he says with conviction.

Kelvin’s goal is to secure a job in the media industry, become financially independent, and support both himself and others. He sees himself as a role model to young people who look up to him. To his sponsor, Kelvin expresses heartfelt gratitude: “I am so grateful for the great work you have done in my life. I promise not to let you down.” To fellow students, his message is simple yet powerful: “Trust yourself, work hard, and believe you can make it. Nothing is impossible.”
Kelvin’s story reflects the heart of Moja Tu’s mission: to provide education that not only changes individual lives but also builds changemakers who shape a better world through their talents, courage, and voices.
