What begins as a professional relationship can sometimes blossom into a life-changing journey. For Sarah Epting, a Salesforce consultant and technologist from the U.S., her introduction to Moja Tu was just that—a simple project that turned into a deeply personal mission to empower through education, build connection, and create lasting change.
Sarah first connected with Moja Tu a few years ago as a Salesforce consultant, helping the Moja Tu team streamline its operations. But something about the organization stuck with her. “I was first hired to help the Moja Tu team on a small project,” she recalls. “Later, I saw that Moja Tu was partnering with TechLit Africa to provide computer labs to rural schools. I decided that my company would sponsor half a lab, and I’d ask my connections to also donate.”
Her admiration for Moja Tu grew as she followed their impact. “Over the years, I loved reading everything the organization was doing. I can’t remember exactly what sparked me to sponsor a student, but I’m so glad I did,” she says.
Meeting Maryline: The Power of Personal Connection
Sarah’s recent trip to Kenya this April brought her sponsorship experience full circle. She met Maryline, the student she supports, and together they shared unforgettable experiences: a hippo boat ride, a safari, and quality time at her school.

“Meeting Maryline’s family and going to her school left a lasting impression,” Sarah says. “I could see clearly that her family would not have the means to send her to school if not for Moja Tu and my sponsorship. It made me grateful for the opportunities and safety nets that exist in America—like guaranteed high school.”
One message was loud and clear throughout Sarah’s visit: education transforms lives.
“Education is everything,” she says. “The students were so grateful for the gift they were being given. Their desire to succeed was apparent. The joy was palpable.”
Even in the rural areas they visited, the impact of a university education was evident. “Children able to finish university have an opportunity to give back to their families and communities in a way they wouldn’t have without Moja Tu.”
What Makes Moja Tu Different
For Sarah, Moja Tu stands out because of its one-to-one model. “Other organizations might say $100 a month sponsors one child, but they don’t really mean one-to-one. Moja Tu helps you form a personal relationship with the student you’re supporting. That’s what makes it so powerful.”
Sarah’s involvement didn’t stop at sponsorship. As a technologist, she’s continued to support Moja Tu through Salesforce training, helping the team better track students and streamline operations.
“What I try to do when I help an organization is to enable them to use the data they record to move their mission forward,” she explains. “By teaching them a new way of using the system, I was able to show them efficiencies and speed up administrative tasks so that they can enhance what they’re doing.”
And for students, it’s a game-changer. “Salesforce is used in most large companies. Understanding how it works is one more tool that makes you attractive to potential employers. It’s also open source, with lots of free online education. A curious and motivated student can dive deeper and really enrich themselves professionally.”
The Most Rewarding Part? A Smile.

Looking back, Sarah says the most fulfilling part of her journey is simple: “Seeing the smile on Maryline’s face and looking forward to seeing what she will accomplish.”
Her advice to others considering sponsorship?
“Sponsoring a student through Moja Tu could be one of the most rewarding things you do in your life. In Kenya, education truly opens doors and opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be open.”
Sarah’s story is a powerful reminder that impact often begins with a single step—a project, a donation, a conversation. But when we lead with purpose and heart, that step can spark a lifelong journey of hope, transformation, and connection.
