Maxwell Gikoyo’s story is one of quiet strength, vision, and gratitude. Born and raised in Eastern Kenya, Maxwell is the lastborn in a family of four, brought up in a loving but financially struggling household. Despite the challenges, he remained focused on his education, and thanks to Moja Tu, his dreams are now taking shape.
He attended Mang’u Boys High School, where he excelled academically and made significant personal growth. His proudest achievement came when he scored a B+ in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams (KCSE), securing a spot at university to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mechatronic Engineering, a course he chose due to his passion for robotics, innovation, and mechanical systems.
“I have always been interested in creating things that can solve problems,” Maxwell says. His dream is to become a robotics and mechanical engineer, with the goal of building machines that help improve everyday life, particularly in addressing environmental and climate change challenges.
While school life had its highs, Maxwell also faced many lows. Coming from a low-income background, he often felt pressure and fear that he might not be able to complete school. But everything changed in 2019, when he joined Moja Tu. “It was my turning point,” he reflects. “Moja Tu gave me confidence, stability, and belief in myself.”
Beyond academics, he is curious and hardworking. He enjoys researching on YouTube, watching documentaries, and learning about real-world problems. He has been inspired by inventors like Elon Musk and dreams of building a strong name in the tech world, starting right here in Kenya.
His role models include his parents, who, despite tough times, have supported and shaped his values. From them, Maxwell learned the importance of hard work, humility, and giving back. His Christian faith keeps him grounded, and he lives by the verse Joshua 1:9, which encourages him to remain strong and courageous in the face of life’s trials.
Maxwell is also socially active and open-minded. He describes himself as “a quiet and calm person, but friendly.” His teachers have praised him for his discipline and sense of responsibility, and his friends admire his deep thinking and honesty.
Looking ahead, he aims to gain hands-on experience and ultimately create innovative machines that address real-world problems. His biggest goal is to become a self-made entrepreneur, build a name in robotics and mechanics, and inspire other young people from underprivileged backgrounds.
“To my sponsor, thank you so much for making me feel hopeful, worthy, and capable. You have truly changed my life,” He says. “To the Moja Tu family, thank you for standing by me. I will work hard to make you proud.”
With a grateful heart, a bright mind, and big dreams, Maxwell is ready for the next chapter, and we cannot wait to see where his path leads.
