For Joseph Kinuthia, his journey to becoming an educator has been a fulfilling blend of academic exploration, personal growth, and a deep-seated desire to inspire others. From earning a degree in economics and history to the pursuit of a postgraduate diploma in education, Joseph’s story reflects resilience, adaptability, and a passion for shaping young minds.
“I’ve always loved the subjects of business and history,” Joseph shares, reflecting on his days at Njabini Boys High School. His higher educational journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and History at Chuka University, which he completed in 2024. But his path took a transformative turn when he realized that his true calling lay in teaching.
“A degree in Economics and history provides more limited job opportunities compared to education,” Joseph explains. “That realization, coupled with my passion for inspiring the future generation, drove me to enroll in a postgraduate diploma program in education.”
The shift to teaching felt natural for Joseph, and pursuing the postgraduate diploma equipped him with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive as a teacher. He credits education psychology, a key component of his studies, with teaching him how to connect with students and address their unique needs.
“Students all have different needs when it comes to their ability to learn, and understanding how to identify those needs and overcome emotions and attitudes in an educational setting has been invaluable,” he says.
Joseph’s passion for teaching stems from his desire to be a positive influence and to help students reach their full potential. This passion became evident when, during his diploma program, he delivered a practice lesson that was praised by his university assessor. “That’s when I knew I was on the right path to becoming the best teacher I can be.”
Looking ahead, Joseph aspires to teach business studies and history in high school. His background in economics enriches his approach to teaching business studies. “Most concepts in economics are closely related to business studies, which gives me a strong foundation to draw from,” he says. His long-term goals also include advancing his studies with a PhD in education or economics, and eventually taking on a leadership role as a principal or deputy principal.
Joseph attributes much of his success to the unwavering support of Moja Tu. “They provided school fees, upkeep, and even mental and psychological support through their mentorship program,” he says gratefully. This support enabled him to navigate challenges and focus on his studies.
Looking back, Joseph is filled with pride. “University graduation is a significant milestone. Completing my education feels like a major achievement. I’m proud of the hard work, dedication, and perseverance that brought me here,” he says with a smile.
As Joseph steps into the classroom, he’s ready to shape the futures of countless students, just as his own future was shaped by his determination and Moja Tu’s mentorship and unwavering belief in the power of education.
