Edwin Masua is a Form Four graduate from Makueni and a proud beneficiary of the Moja Tu Organization. His story is one of resilience, quiet determination, and what becomes possible when the right opportunity meets hard work.
Before joining Moja Tu, Edwin’s education journey was marked by uncertainty. He attended Musuu Tohle Primary School, where financial challenges often disrupted his learning. Being sent home for school fees was common, and at times education felt more like a fragile hope than a guaranteed path forward. Still, Edwin held on. He worked hard, believing that education could one day change his story. “Even when things were difficult, I kept telling myself that school was my way out,” he says.
After sitting for his KCPE examinations and performing well, Edwin’s dream of joining high school began to slip away. His family simply could not afford the fees. Just as that dream seemed out of reach, Moja Tu entered his life. He applied, attended the interviews, and was selected for sponsorship. That moment changed everything. “When I received the news that I had been sponsored, I felt relief and hope at the same time,” Edwin recalls. “For the first time, I could see a future I could work toward without fear.”
Through Moja Tu, Edwin received full high school sponsorship. His school fees were covered, transport money was provided, and essentials like revision books and shopping were taken care of throughout the term. This support lifted a heavy burden from his shoulders and allowed him to focus fully on his studies. With the steady support of his sponsors, Christine and Carlos, and the Moja Tu family, Edwin stayed in school consistently and studied without constant interruptions.
Like many students, he faced challenges along the way, especially adjusting to boarding school life for the first time. The workload was demanding, and the environment was new. But Edwin remained focused and disciplined, reminding himself why he was there. “I knew what this opportunity meant, not just for me but for my family,” he says. “That kept me going even when it was hard.”
Edwin’s commitment paid off. With a B+ grade, Edwin emerged as one of the top-performing Moja Tu students in the national high school examinations. He believes his background played a big role in shaping his work ethic. Knowing where he came from and the sacrifices made on his behalf motivated him to give his best every single day.
Receiving his results was an emotional moment. Edwin was grateful and happy, even though he felt he could still aim higher. His family celebrated the results with pride and joy, seeing them as a sign of hope and a major step forward.
As he looks ahead, Edwin plans to pursue a medical course at university. His dream of becoming a doctor was born early, inspired by a deep desire to save lives and serve those in need. He hopes one day to become one of the best doctors in Kenya. Beyond personal success, Edwin dreams of giving back by supporting and sponsoring other children and mentoring students who, like him, may be unsure of what the future holds.
Edwin’s journey is a powerful reminder that with opportunity, support, and determination, even the most uncertain beginnings can lead to extraordinary outcomes. Through education and belief, a young man from Makueni is stepping confidently into a future filled with purpose and possibility.
