For Hilda, education was never just about getting good grades—it was her pathway to a better future. Raised by a single mother who struggled to make ends meet, and later under the care of her grandmother, she learned early on that education was the key to changing her circumstances.
Despite financial hardships, Hilda remained determined. “My grandmother always told me that education is the greatest equalizer. It was her words that kept me going, even when the road seemed impossible,” she shares.
Hilda’s journey took a life-changing turn when she joined Moja Tu. This opportunity not only allowed her to pursue her education but also gave her hope and the motivation to strive for excellence.
Before joining Moja Tu, Hilda’s future was uncertain. Her family’s financial situation meant that affording school fees and basic learning materials was an uphill battle. But she refused to let her circumstances define her.
“I knew that if I proved myself in school, someone would notice and give me a chance,” she says. That chance came in 2017, just before she transitioned from primary to high school. Moja Tu representatives visited her school, and thanks to her outstanding academic performance, she was selected for sponsorship.
With Moja Tu’s support, Hilda attended one of the leading high schools in her region, where she excelled academically. The weight of expectation—to make her family, community, and sponsor proud—was heavy, but she stayed focused on her studies. Even when she lost her beloved grandmother, she channeled her grief into determination, refusing to let setbacks hinder her goals.
Her perseverance paid off when she earned an A- in her KCSE exams, securing a place at the University of Nairobi to pursue Veterinary Medicine—a field she had always been passionate about.
Hilda’s love for animals and her desire to make a difference inspired her career choice. “Growing up, I saw many farm animals suffer due to lack of proper care. I wanted to be part of the solution—educating people on how to take care of their animals and prevent diseases,” she explains.
Her vision goes beyond just treating animals; she wants to improve livelihoods by enhancing animal productivity, ensuring that farmers can earn a stable income and sustain their families. In the future, she hopes to own a large company that contributes to the veterinary industry and community development.
She also envisions running an animal clinic where she can provide treatment and education to farmers, helping them take better care of their livestock. Additionally, she dreams of becoming a Moja Tu sponsor herself, giving other children the same opportunity that transformed her life.
Hilda believes that giving back is essential, knowing firsthand how a helping hand can change someone’s future.
Hilda’s journey hasn’t been easy, but she hopes her story inspires other students facing similar struggles. She urges them to embrace every opportunity that comes their way and make the most of it. She believes that success is a process, and trusting the journey is essential, even when the path seems uncertain. Hard work and determination, she emphasizes, always pay off, and no matter how difficult things may seem, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Her deep gratitude for the Moja Tu community and her sponsor is evident. “Moja Tu gave me more than just an education—they gave me hope, support, and the belief that I could achieve my dreams,” she says.
