Grace’s Educational Journey: Through Sponsorship to Success

December 12, 2023

Grace is one of Moja Tu’s most recent university graduates, having achieved a bachelor’s degree in horticulture. Her academic performance during her time in the program has been remarkable; she narrowly missed, by a single point, achieving first-class honors!

In 2015 while in form one, Grace interviewed with Moja Tu and joined the program in 2016.  Her school’s principal recognized Grace’s exceptional intelligence and recommended her for sponsorship because her family’s humble background prevented them from affording the school fees.

“Before receiving sponsorship, my life was challenging, filled with unfulfilled dreams due to financial constraints. I was even transferred to a day school, which is less expensive than a boarding school. The problem with many day schools in Kenya is that they are underfunded and understaffed, which affects the quality of education,” she offers.

Grace was beside herself with joy when she was selected for sponsorship. She was immediately transferred to a quality high school, and her educational journey became more comfortable as Moja Tu covered her school fees and provided for her other needs. This enabled her to focus solely on her studies, leading to exceptional performance on her high school examinations and the fulfillment of her dream to attend university.

Now, Grace is elated to have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in horticulture, a field she passionately describes as “the science and art of growing crops.” Despite the demanding nature of her coursework, which often involved long hours outdoors and walking through the campus studying various plants, she persevered.

“When I joined campus in 2019, there were about six women in my class. However, I am the only woman graduating because the others dropped out,” she reveals.

Grace has a deep love for working with and nurturing plants, which is why she is incredibly proud of her horticultural studies. The skills she acquired during her educational journey have significantly contributed to her personal growth. She now plans to pursue a master’s degree in plant biotechnology and plant breeding to gain a more concentrated specialization in her field.

Grace acknowledges that she is not the same person she was four years ago, and she recognizes that she owes her transformation and growth to the opportunities provided by her education. She feels deeply appreciative and humbled to be an educated young woman eager to embark on her career journey.

Her immediate goals include finding a job and eventually becoming an entrepreneur. Grace expresses heartfelt gratitude to Paula (her dedicated sponsor), Kathy, and the entire Moja Tu community for their unwavering support throughout her educational journey.

We at Moja Tu are extremely proud of Grace’s remarkable journey and academic achievements, and we wholeheartedly wish her continued success in all her future endeavors. Her story serves as an inspiration to us all. Let’s join hands in supporting other deserving students like Grace, enabling them to fulfill their dreams and make a positive impact on the world.
