An Opportunity That Changed Everything
John’s educational journey almost ended before it truly began. After earning admission to high school, his family simply could not afford the fees. Like many bright young people in Kenya, financial hardship threatened to cut short his dreams before they had the chance to take shape.

While studying at university, John came across a podcast that would shape the course of his future. One sentence stayed with him. “Stop waiting for a degree to save you. Pick up a skill.”
He decided to take that advice seriously. Armed with nothing more than a laptop, internet access, and determination, John began teaching himself how to code. The learning curve was steep. There were moments of frustration when nothing seemed to work and giving up felt like the easier option. But he kept showing up, one lesson, one project, and one line of code at a time.
“I realized that every expert was once a beginner,” John says. “The only difference is that they didn’t stop learning.”
That persistence would soon begin to pay off.
Small Skills. Big Impact
John’s first freelance coding jobs did not earn much money, but they proved something important. His skills had value. As his confidence and experience grew, so did his opportunities. Before long, the income from freelancing helped him and his sister achieve something their family had dreamed about for years.
“The house I grew up in leaked whenever it rained,” John recalls. “When it rained, we didn’t celebrate. We prayed.”
Together, they built their mother a proper home. For John, that moment meant far more than financial success. “It reminded me that one skill can completely change a family’s story.”
Building Solutions That Matter
John did not stop at freelancing. Together with fellow university developers, he built a housing application that connects landlords and tenants, solving a real challenge while giving young developers practical experience building software with real-world impact.
Learning to code also transformed his confidence. Last year, he participated in one of Nairobi’s leading hackathons and walked away with the Best Coder of the Year award. For someone who once struggled to write his first line of code, it was a defining moment.
“Growth doesn’t happen in isolation,” John says. “I’m grateful to my sponsors, mentors, and everyone who believed in me before I believed in myself.”
Education Plus Skills Create Opportunity
Today, John is preparing to graduate with both a university degree and practical work experience. Instead of waiting for employment, he is already earning an income through freelancing, building digital solutions, and creating opportunities for himself. He often reflects on how different life might have been had he never learned to code.
“I would probably still be at home looking for a job,” he says. “Learning a skill changed everything.”
His advice to other young people is refreshingly simple. “Just start. It doesn’t have to be coding. Think about where you want your life to go, find the skill that will help you get there, and commit to learning it.”
