Meet Esther Kisaka, a fourth-year student at the Technical University of Kenya, pursuing a degree in Tourism and Travel Management. She is currently in her final semester and looking back, her journey has been nothing short of transformational.
Before joining Moja Tu, Esther was already focused and determined. She was a top performer in school, but deep inside, she struggled with self-confidence. Public speaking was a challenge, and she often kept her ideas to herself, even when she had something valuable to say. That began to change when she joined Moja Tu over eight years ago.
“Being part of Moja Tu gave me more than just an education. It gave me a sense of community, belonging, and the courage to grow,” she shares candidly.
Through life skills workshops, mentorship, and continuous encouragement, Esther started pushing herself out of her comfort zone. She joined group discussions, volunteered for minor leadership roles, and slowly learned to speak up. Over time, she discovered her voice and began to believe in her potential.
Academically, Moja Tu lifted a huge weight off her shoulders. “I no longer had to worry about school fees or basic needs. That peace of mind allowed me to focus fully on my studies. Personally, the support system helped shape me into a confident, focused, and purpose-driven young woman.”
One of her proudest moments was passing her high school exit exams with good grades despite facing several personal challenges. It was a reminder that hard work and discipline truly pay off
Esther’s love for travel, culture, and connecting with people led her to a career in tourism. Growing up in Kenya, she saw firsthand how tourism could create jobs and bring people from different backgrounds together. That inspired her to study tourism and travel management, where she has enjoyed learning both the theoretical and practical aspects of the industry. From customer service to sustainable travel, to field trips and interacting with industry professionals, the course has helped her understand how tourism works behind the scenes.
She recently did her industrial attachment at Priority Wild Safaris, a leading tour company in Kenya. “During my time there, I assisted with customer service, tour planning, office tasks, and client interactions. One of the moments that stood out for me was organizing a group tour for international visitors from start to finish. I helped prepare itineraries, welcomed the guests, and collected their feedback,” she says. Seeing the guests happy and satisfied made her proud and gave her confidence that she was on the right career path.
Her outstanding performance during the internship didn’t go unnoticed. Esther was offered a position at Priority Wild Safaris, where she now works while completing her final semester of studies. The role has enabled her to continue refining her skills in client relations and tour coordination, while making meaningful contributions to a company that shares her passion for showcasing Kenya’s natural beauty.
“This opportunity has been a dream come true. Every day, I get to do what I love—create unforgettable experiences for travelers while learning from professionals in the industry,” she says.
Esther’s dream is to become a respected tourism professional, working with top companies and utilizing her skills to showcase Kenya’s beauty and culture. She is constantly improving her communication and customer service skills and making the most of every opportunity that comes her way.
Outside class, she enjoys traveling, exploring new places, reading about personal development and tourism trends, and attending community events. Her biggest motivation on tough days is remembering where she came from, how far she has come, and the people who continue to support her.
To her sponsor and the Moja Tu Organization, “Thank you for believing in me and walking this journey with me. Your support has changed my life. You’ve given me the chance to chase my dreams and become the person I am today.”
Her advice to other Moja Tu students is, “Take every opportunity seriously. Believe in yourself and stay focused, even when it gets tough. With hard work and Moja Tu’s support, you can achieve more than you ever imagined.”
