Meet David Makau, a passionate young man pursuing a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance at Kenyatta University. Now in his second year, David has a lot to achieve, so he is focused on making resolutions that will help him reach his goals. He sees the importance of making yearly resolutions to stay on track throughout the journey toward his goals, which include excelling in his studies and being a change agent in his community.
“In making resolutions, we must understand our own capacity and driving forces to determine if a resolution is achievable,” David advises. He thinks that one of the most valuable resolutions people can make is improving their communication skills because once someone’s mouth is open, they tell the world who they really are.
“Last year, I made a resolution to improve and maintain my GPA, which I did not achieve, and I was very demotivated. Now my resolution is to work toward surpassing last year’s target,” David added.
Poverty is the driving force helping David stay motivated throughout the year. His parents are not able to support him financially, but his Moja Tu sponsorship covers his school fees and provides for his upkeep and accommodation costs. Each day he wakes up, he is determined not to take this opportunity for granted.
David would like to encourage others to ensure improving health and wellbeing is on their list of resolutions. “Take time to exercise and also have fun, as we only live once.”
He advises that making resolutions is one thing, but having a strategic plan toward achieving these resolutions is just as important. “Make your goals practical by allocating time, money, and focus to ensure you work on them daily in an organized manner,” he added.
David maintains a positive mindset to stay on track with his resolutions by not losing sight of his overall goals and his vision for the future. He believes that with hard work, discipline, and determination, he can achieve his dreams and positively impact his community.
