Meet Tabitha: Flying High With Education

Tabitha’s early life was marked by many challenges when it came to getting her basic needs. She hails from Laikipia county, one of the poorest parts of the country, and access to a good education is extremely difficult. She was able to join a remote primary school in Laikipia to finish the first leg of her educational journey, and here, she blew everyone away. Tabitha never let her humble roots hold her back from pursuing her dreams, and she impressed everyone by earning a 412 on her KCPE.

Unfortunately, after primary school, her dream of becoming a neurosurgeon seemed to be in jeopardy, since her family could not raise the school fees needed for her to join high school. We heard of her case in 2018 and promised to find her a sponsor for her first year of high school in 2019. We were successful, and now, Tabitha is at the top of her game at Mary Hill Girls High School. She is a brilliant, dedicated student, enthusiastic about her schooling and determined to achieve her dreams. She was even recognized in a local newspaper for her academic prowess after she earned the highest grades out of all the students in her school!

During a moment of reflection with Tabitha, she had the following to say:

“I was almost hopeless until Moja Tu came to my help. The events of the day I met the Moja Tu board members and sponsors are still vivid in my mind. To me, the day I met them marked a new beginning. Even though I knew that I might not be able to carry on with my studies, I did not give up. It seemed I was down and out, but I was not broken. I had to be hopeful so I could give hope to my family. I shared my story and my dreams with Moja Tu and soon, they helped me turn everything around.

Joining the Moja Tu family has been life changing. Through Moja Tu, I have been given the chance to achieve my goals, and I am confident that I will make it with hard work and a positive attitude.

My favorite subjects in school are Mathematics, English and Biology. In the first term, I joined the school environmental club. During weekends, we plant trees, tend to the school garden and clean up the schoolgrounds. When I grow up, I would like to become a neurosurgeon. The teachers are also very helpful in guiding us towards attaining good grades and realizing our goals. I have already learned so much in high school about how to be responsible for myself and for my classwork.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my sponsors, who have encouraged me on Skype calls and through letter writing. I will keep dreaming big and working hard so that I can live up to my aspirations.”
