Meet Maria

Born and raised in the slums of Nairobi, Maria managed to finish her primary and secondary schooling, though her attendance was always on and off. Her parents are both day laborers who had no means to keep both Maria and her sister in school. The family depended on the generosity of well-wishers to help the girls attend school, but the support they received was not always consistent. Despite these challenges, Maria knew that the only way she could change the course of her and her family’s future was to get her education.

Maria worked hard in secondary school, and her efforts were rewarded with a C+ on her KCSE and an invitation to join Kenyatta University to pursue a degree in communications and media studies. Though her dreams were close at hand, she was unable to join the university, as her family could not afford the high fees associated with continuing her education. Though it has been three years since Maria graduated high school and was invited to Kenyatta, she still holds on to her dream of earning her degree and building a better life for herself with her education.

In August 2018, Maria’s father passed away, making it even more difficult for her mother to sustain their family. To help ease the strain on her mother, Maria has been working as a maid in other people’s homes to bring some income in for the family. Maria is very smart and hardworking, and wants nothing more than to go back to school and earn the education that she deserves. Maria has waited long enough.
